Love God. Love People. Make Disciples of Jesus Christ
As we look towards the beginning of a new year, we invite you to join our church family in setting aside the first part of the year to seek God together through 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” These words remind us that the right order brings the right outcome. When we place God first, everything else in our lives finds its proper place.
At Lifepoint, our mission has always been simple: to love God, love people, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. These 21 days are an intentional opportunity to realign our hearts with that mission and to prepare ourselves for what God desires to do in and through us this year.
Whether you’ve fasted before or this is your first time, we encourage you to participate at whatever level you’re able. This is not about performance or pressure—it’s about pursuing God wholeheartedly.
What Is Fasting?
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that helps quiet the noise of the world so we can hear God more clearly. Throughout Scripture, God’s people fast in moments of repentance, dependence, guidance, intercession, and renewal.
At its core, fasting is voluntarily giving up something—most often food—for a spiritual purpose. Fasting does not earn God’s favor; it positions our hearts to depend on Him more deeply.
Why We Fast
We fast because Scripture shows us that fasting helps us:
- Draw near to God (James 4:8)
- Seek God’s direction (Acts 13:2–3)
- Cultivate humility (Psalm 69:10)
- Strengthen prayer (Matthew 17:21)
Fasting reminds us that God—not comfort, control, or consumption—is our source of life.
Types of Fasts
There is no single “right” way to fast. We encourage everyone to prayerfully seek God about what kind of fast He may be inviting you into. This is about pursuing God with wisdom and faith, not pressure or comparison. As you pray, please also consider speaking with your doctor if you are considering any fast that could impact your health.
- Full Fast — Only liquids (water, juice, broth) for a set period
- Daniel Fast — Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; no meat, sweets, or bread
- Partial Fast — Abstaining from specific foods, meals, or habits
- Sunrise-to-Sunset Fast — Eating only in the evening, with prayer during the day
- Non-Food Fast — Fasting from distractions like social media, TV, or entertainment
The focus is not deprivation—it’s prayer.
Practical Tips for Fasting
- Set a clear intention and spiritual purpose
- Stay hydrated and care for your health
- Replace what you give up with prayer and Scripture
- Expect resistance—and reward; fasting is spiritual warfare
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:17–18 that fasting is meant to be a hidden act of devotion, seen and rewarded by God Himself.
